Dear Friends of Charlottesville T’ai Chi Center,
I have some exciting news to share with you: A brand new, user-friendly CTCC website will launch around July 22 at CTCC's usual URL, charlottesvilletaichi.org. This completely redesigned site is easy to navigate and pleasing on the eyes. It also introduces a new online registration system for in-person classes that will give students the flexibility to book particular class dates and reschedule if need be. I would like to thank all the volunteers who put so much energy and love into this project.
In tandem, we have taken this opportunity to revise the class fee structure. As a non-profit organization, we always work hard to meet our expenses while offering classes at a reasonable price. Soon after the pandemic started, we offered free Zoom classes to help support the community. During that uncertain time, instructors donated their skills and labor. As the pandemic went on, we set a reasonable fee for Zoom classes, and when we opened the new Stewart Street dojo, we offered in-person classes at a reduced rate.
Now that Zoom classes are well-established and students have settled into classes at the dojo, it's time to put fees back on a sustainable basis. We know that times are challenging, so we have adopted some measures to help. For in-person classes, a discount package program is available as in pre-COVID days. CTCC will also offer family discounts on in-person classes.
Please spend a little time exploring the new website after it debuts. There will be two paths to register: one for in-person classes and one for Zoom classes. (If you are taking both types of classes, please follow both paths.) As with anything new, refinements will be needed! We look forward to hearing from you how we can continue to improve our website and class offerings.
In addition, CTCC will offer a one-month Qi Gong class in August. We offer Qi Gong classes from time to time, and this will be a good opportunity to learn in an in-person setting. Saturday group practice continues at the IX Art Park from 8:30 am. In case of rain, Saturday practice moves to Ting Pavilion. Please check our website and Facebook for notice of changes.
Have a great summer,
Hiromi Johnson

Re: Upcoming Online Auction - deadline for donations is extended to 4/12/22
NOTE: We are extending the donation period to April 12th and hope you'll consider donating an item for the auction or soliciting a donation from a business or service provider. The original email with the links for submitting items is below. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Charlottesville T’ai Chi Center (CTCC), a local 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to teaching and promoting the health benefits and art of Tai Chi Ch’uan, has moved into a new dojo space at 512 Stewart Street in Charlottesville. After nearly 2 years of virtual classes, we are looking forward to settling into this new space and welcoming students both new and continuing. We hope to inspire renewed interest in our programs and expand the CTCC community.
This is an opportune time to raise funds to help with the transition and the rollout of new initiatives, so we will be holding an online auction in April. The success of the auction will depend on the items, goods, and services to be auctioned, and we hope you can help. Please consider donating items or services for the auction, and please ask area artists, service providers, and restaurants for donations for the auction.
Information regarding donating items for the auction is below. The submission form is located online at https://www.charlottesvilletaichi.org/auctiondon/. Please complete one submission form per item. If you have any questions or difficulty with the submission process, please email auction@charlottesvilletaichi.org.
If you intend to approach a restaurant, artist, or place of business, please check the list of potential donors at this link. If they are already being contacted, we want to avoid duplicate requests. If your potential donor is not listed, please email auction@charlottesvilletaichi.org and we’ll update the list to note that you are contacting them. Note that access to the donor contact form is for current CTCC students only.
Thank you for your participation in this important event. We sincerely appreciate your support.

Dear CTCC Students,
If you are planning to come to the 9 am Group T'ai Chi session this Saturday (4/9) at the Ix Art Park, note that the Charlottesville Marathon will be taking place at the same time. The race starts at 7 am from the Downtown Mall, and it does NOT pass by Ix Park. However, depending on your driving route, you could encounter delays.
You can find a map of the race here: https://charlottesvillemarathon.com/docs/course/cville_marathon_map_2022.pdf
General information on the race is found at:
https://charlottesvillemarathon.com/index.php/race-info/about-us
At this writing, the weather forecast looks good for Saturday, but as always, if that changes, please check for an announcement by 7 am on the homepage and on Facebook.

Dear Friends of CTCC,
Spring is here and we are settling into the new dojo. It is wonderful to be able to practice inside the dojo and outside in the parking lot. When the two big maple trees and crepe myrtles start to open their leaves and flowers, it will be gorgeous to practice under their shade.
Since the pandemic started, I have written monthly messages to give you news and updates on our status. With the new dojo open, I am going to discontinue these messages, but Jerry Floro will continue sending monthly updates. We are gradually getting back to our original teaching philosophy of one-on-one teaching, while retaining the Zoom classes.
The monthly in-person and Zoom classes will continue into April. Please check out our website at https://www.charlottesvilletaichi.org/classes/class-schedule/
Our goal now is to ensure the sustainability of the dojo, and your help is needed now more than ever. To help raise funds in support of the transition, we are having an online auction in April. Donations of items to be auctioned off will be accepted through April 8. The submission form is on the website at https://www.charlottesvilletaichi.org/auctiondon/.
If you have any questions or difficulty with the submission process, please email auction@charlottesvilletaichi.org.
Please mark your calendar for World T’ai Chi Day on Saturday, April 30. “One Breath, One World” — We will gather and contemplate peace in the world. This year we will meet at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Please check out our website and Facebook for further details.
Saturday Group Practice will be held at the IX Art Park at 9 am. In case of inclement weather, please check for an announcement by 7 am on the homepage and on Facebook.
Thank you for all your support, from the beginning of the pandemic, to leaving the Water St. dojo, venturing into Zoom classes, and now moving to a new space. Together we have come a long way.

Dear Friends of CTCC,
In January, Charlottesville was hit by heavy, wet snow and it has remained much colder than usual. I hope everyone has stayed safe and warm. We will welcome the Chinese New Year of the Tiger on Tuesday, February 1. The Tiger is associated with Yang (active) energy, and enthusiasm will rise both in ourselves and in others. It is a perfect time to start the 100-day challenge: pick one movement and practice it for 100 days.
I am happy to inform you of some good news. Our landlord has undertaken extensive renovations to prepare the property for us to use as our new T‘ai Chi dojo. Flooring is installed and a new bathroom in the waiting room will soon be finished. We moved our belongings from the storage unit to the new dojo space last weekend. We will be working to prepare the space in February.
In March, we will start classes in the new dojo, and we will continue to offer both Zoom and in-person classes. For the latter, we will limit the number of students to eight per class, which is ideal for learning and teaching martial arts. You will receive one-on-one instruction and individual attention.
We will also keep strict protocols for Covid and we will modify these in accordance with CDC guidance, federal and state requirements, and our Board of Directors’ considerations.
We have three new instructors. Jerry Floro, Naomi Ihara, and Pete Yadlowsky went through almost a year of training in the instructor training program. They passed their exam and finished practice teaching. I thank the students who supported them and gave meaningful feedback. They will start teaching in the spring. With these new instructors, we can add more classes in 2022.
Another piece of good news is that a short induction ceremony for new in-door and in-room students will take place on Sunday, February 20. Jonathan Rosen, Larry Banner, Serenity Carr will be inducted as in-door students, and Chinako Bohn and Naomi Ihara as in-room students. They have worked hard learning multiple forms, showed their commitment to the Cheng Ming system, and good Martial “Wu De” (etiquette). An additional traditional ceremony will be led by Grandmaster Wang Fu Lai when he visits us this summer.
The February schedule is up on our website . Please check it out and register.
Saturday Group practice will continue on Zoom for now as we enter February. However, if warmer weather is forecast, we will meet at the IX Art Park at 9:00 am. Please check our website or Facebook, as we will announce by 7:00 am if there are any changes.
Looking forward to practicing with you,
Hiromi Johnson
